09/10/2009 - Arrive Home from China

Heather was a very good girl during the entire flight home from China she slept most of the way. She then had her first experience with a car seat during the ride home. She became a bit restless but fortunately this only occurred within a few miles of our home. Tears were pouring out of her when we came into the house initially but after a short time with Mommy showing her around the house she settled down. We finally got her to bed around 2am and rested for just over an hour before waking up with tears and screaming. Mommy got up and played with her until 5 am at which time I relieved her until 10am allowing Karen to get some well deserved rest. I then took my turn to get some sleep from 10 to about 5pm and now the whole family is up and its about 3am on September 12th. I guess you might say our internal clocks are confused but Heather's schedule will adjust over the next few days (we hope) allowing us to resume our normal schedules. Thankfully I have three more weeks off before returning to work and Karen is off until mid-November. Here is a picture of Heather sleeping in her bed for the first time.

  1. It is so nice to get back home. The sleep will come! We were adjusting to time zone changes for about a week. Getting outside during the day, sped up the process a little quicker for us. Congratulations!!!

  2. We were adjusted in about three days. Even when awake at night, we kept the house dark and things quiet and during the day struggled to keep everyone awake at the right times. It was a hard three days, but was over quickly.

  3. Glad to hear that you are all home safe and sound! Hope the sleep comes soon. Pete thought it was 3 or 4 days before he adjusted to the time zone change, but it took longer than that for both girls to turn their days and nights around (they both had kind of extended sleep issues which isn't the norm). Having that extra time off before having to go back to work will be such a help. Enjoy your time together as you all settle in!

  4. I know your beds have never felt so comfortable! I remember feeling somewhat disoriented the first week or so after getting home. There's so much adjustment...body clocks, first-time parenting, re-adjusting to life in the U.S. (you know, being able to drink water from the faucet, etc). It was such a special family bonding time, though. So glad you both have some time off to enjoy this time together. You'll probably enjoy it more, though, once you get to have more sleep. ;)
